John P. Meehan, M.D., received his B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University in 1986, graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1991, and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at U.C. Davis in 1996. He pursued fellowship training in Sports Medicine with S.O.A. R. Orthopedics in San Francisco from 1996-1997.  He was awarded the prestigious Aufranc Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, which he completed from 1997-1998.

Prior to joining Sacramento Knee & Sports Medicine in 2010, Dr. Meehan was a faculty member with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at U.C. Davis Medical Center for 12 years, serving as Chief of Adult Reconstructive Surgery from 2003-2010.

His honors include: election to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society; awarded the U.C. Davis Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Transitional Internship in 1991; and selection as Faculty of the Year in 2003. He received the U.C. Davis National Board of Advisors Vision Grant in 2009, in which he generated a publication selected as one of the top research papers at the 2011 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons’ annual meeting. This manuscript was reported both nationally and internationally by numerous health-related news organizations.

He has published extensively in the medical literature on topics related to hip and knee replacement, with a special emphasis on the prevention of infections in joint replacement surgery. Dr. Meehan continues to collaborate on research projects which include the safety of bilateral knee replacement surgeries and the efficacy of various treatments for the prevention of venous thromboembolism.

Dr. Meehan is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Western Orthopedic Association, and the California Orthopedic Association.  He is a team physician for the Sacramento River Cats and Sacramento City College.

Dr. Meehan enjoys sporting activities such as cycling, and outings with his family.
